Critical Jazzman No87 - Janvier 2003
WILLIAM CHABBEY
Jazz Horizons
A barely disguised devotion to Wes Montgomery but a tested knowledge of its
origin and an original repertoire.
The guitar alternates without true hiatus,
between moments of groove in its purest form from the beginning of the 1960s,
and a fluidity sometimes worthy of Alan Holdsworth (often at the price of a
deterioration the inspiration). It makes you melt as you listen to Patrick
Villanueva, after he assimilated the language of the 1960s organists. Manu
Chabbey's double bass, Urbano Calvarro's drums, Carlos Werneck's guitar and
voice come to the rescue on only two
tracks with Brazilian consonance. On the other tracks Jean-Luc Ditsch shares his
drum sticks with George Brown without suffering too much from the comparison.
These "Jazz horizons" are worthy of faith.
