William Chabbey at the M.J.C.
Jazz evening, Saturday January 18. at the MJC. with, for the first part of
evening, Fernand Pollier's quintet and as guest star the William Chabbey
trio.
A
way to begin 1997 in style with the "Boites à concert" series. The whole of
Fernand Pollier (trumpet, piano, sax, basse, drums, the great group which gave
Miles Davis or John Coltrane some of their greatest hits of jazz) played in a
rather be-bop influenced style.
This high quality music was received well by the public. William Chabbey then
took over until around midnight with his trio, backed up at the end of a
trombonist who joined the group in a friendly way.
The trio is has a delicate form: there's no question of counting on volume to
disguise a mistake.
The positive side of these constraints is that they push the musicians to give
their best.
And William Chabbey on the guitar, Carlos Werneck on bass, and Thierry Arpino on
drums didn't miss, in a varied program which included some regulars and -
especially - parts of the cd which has just been released, "Meeting with cool" whose title is for William Chabbey a profession of faith.
The term of "cool" does not refer only to the famous current jazz of post-war
period illustrated by Miles Davis, Gerry Mulligan or Stan Getz, but also to a
state of sensitivity and of calm , which refuses aggression, even when the
musical expression is deep and intense. There isn't anything slack in this music
which wants to be both anchored in tradition and open to modernism and does not
challenge the "impressioniste" who creates atmospheres (which is perfectly
illustrated on the cd "NUAGES" by Django Reinhardt ).
The trio who got together Saturday evening were different from the trio who
recorded the disc and this let you be aware of the personal qualities of each
musician. We already knew William Chabbey in Pontault-Combault where he teaches
the guitar, and his skill which does not exclude lyricism and sensitivity. But
we also discovered that Carlos Werneck and Thierry Arpino were more partners
than sidemen (they are also friends of the lead player and bring with them
different musical cultures ) which allowed for subtle exchanges, the bass player
adding to the 4 cords of the guitar his own vocal cords..., and the drummer who
can be very powerful and energetic when needed - showing a great lightness of
touched with the brushes.

Jazz at the Villa
"Happy
are they who have the chance to meet this admirable trio"
There weer strong moments of emotion on Thursday evening, at the Robert Martin
villa, in a friendly almost intimate setting, when the three jazzmen started to
play a few pieces.
William Chabbey on guitar, Gil Lachenal on double bass and Andy Baron on drums
have been an inseparable trio now for two years.
They come from different regions and met while touring outside of Paris.
Around an original repertoire, each creates an immense musical and human
cohesion, giving out great heat and an intense scenic energy more in line with
large events than intimate jazz clubs.
The trio has confirmed its music by releasing its first disc called "Meeting
With the cool". They played a lot in the area and particularly in the jazz Club
at Chambéry.
Each musician had the chance to try out various foreign musical styles, That's
why they hope to become known in the world within the framework of this advanced
artistic project.
And this evening, the trio gave the public two hours of very high quality jazz. "One tries to make jazz with respect to tradition and with a glance towards the
future " said William Chabbey who is the leader of the group.
The audience who wanted more could notice the great bond between the musicians
and without doubt gave the group its strengh.
